Clinical Supervision - Couple and Family Therapy

Clinical Supervision

Clinical supervision is an essential cornerstone of practice for any therapist. It is a space for reflection, learning and development of skills. It is also important for attending to self-care, whilst maintaining ethical standards and high levels of clinical practice.

Experience is primary - we learn from experience, we can only understand experience in hindsight, and to learn and integrate our learning we need to reflect. Any reflection and reflective practice is enhanced when discussed with a trusted other - with a skilled supervisor who asks questions, identifies & explores themes and deepens the understanding of clinical work.

Good supervision is an energising process – it is supportive, explorative, expansive and not too comfortable

Couple and family therapy requires a therapist to position themselves differently than in individual therapy. Whilst many individual perspectives need to be heard and understood it is the ‘relationship’ as the focus of intervention. It is important that the couple and family- experience the therapist as being ‘on everyone’s side and no-one’s side’.
